Parents
These are tough times economically, Historically, prices have never been higher. Especially here in the United States, inflation is pretty dramatic. If you’re a parent, you’re probably going to need an increase in your wages to keep up with this new cost of living. That can be a scary thought. Negotiating increases are never easy, and they’re even harder during times of inflation when businesses are also seeing their costs go up. And right after the pandemic when so many families were forced to make hard decisions to get by, it’s even trickier.
Intimidating Conversation
As I said, having a conversation about an increase with your employer is always intimidating. It’s important to keep in mind that, during times of inflation, parents are really hit hardest. Kids don’t really understand the idea of reduced budgets or increased costs of living. They do understand, and can be frustrated by, changes to their environment. Parents have had to make a lot of sacrifices already that impact their child’s environment. Asking to be fairly compensated for that is not unreasonable. You have to be ready to open a dialogue with your employer about this topic, no matter how intimidating it is. No matter what financial struggles they are facing as a business owner, your financial struggles as a parent are harder.
Do Your Homework
What do you bring to the company? You have to know your own worth before anything else. That doesn’t mean you should be cocky or arrogant, but you should be aware of what value you bring to the company by being there. Also, how much do you need? Unlike a wage-increase negotiation during normal times, you aren’t asking for more money just because you feel you deserve it. Do you know the exact dollar amount you need to provide for your family?
Let’s Take Care Of One Another
As a parent and an entrepreneur, it’s always really cool to me to see another parent succeeding in life and in business. I want to see you be successful. Let’s do what we can to lift each other u and help each other through these trying times.
